According to a Bloomberg report that cites 3unnamed sources, the next version of Apple’s iPad,the iPad 3, will arrive in March sporting an HD display and LTE 4G data.The publication’s sources claim that production ofthe iPad 3 has already started ramping up and thatit will hit its stride in February for a March launch.The sources also claim that the iOS-powered tabletwill run on a quad-core processor.

Microsoft might be pushing its Windows Phone 7.5 operating system hard now, butthat doesn’t mean it isn’t hard at work on the next version of the platform.Pocketnow has obtained a laundry list of details covering what will be included withWindows Phone 8, code-named Apollo, and looking at it, it seems like Microsoft istaking the platform in a rather predictable direction.Pocketnow claims that the information it obtained on Windows Phone 8 was froman internal video starring Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore that was shown toMicrosoft’s partners at Nokia. Microsoft insider Paul Thurrott hasindependently corroboratedwhat Pocketnow revealed, so there seems to be some credibility to the information.Windows Phone 8 will apparently support multi-core (both dual and quad)processors, four new (unnamed) screen resolutions, Near Field Communicationswith mobile wallet functionality, and microSD card storage expansion. Most of thesefeatures are fairly predictable, and it appears that Microsoft is beefing up the speclist for Windows Phone so that it looks nicer on paper when compared with Androidand iOS.On the software front, Windows Phone 8 is said to have a very similar codebase tothe desktop version of Windows 8, so developers will be able to share much of theircode between the platforms while Windows phone remains backwards compatiblewith existing apps. The Zune desktop client is being sent off to pasture, to bereplaced by a lighter, quicker solution. Windows Phone 8 devices will include datausage monitors so that users can track their usage with limited data plans, and theLocal Scout feature of Bing Maps will show nearby Wi-Fi hotspots. Windows Phone 8is also due to get the 128-bit encryption from Microsoft’s BitLocker service, whichshould make it more attractive to business users.The Skype app that was reported as entering internal testing soon is carried over toWindows Phone 8, but it will still remain a separate app instead of being integratedWindows Phone 8, but it will still remain a separate app instead of being integratedinto the platforms core functions – a surprising note to say the least. Rumor has it Google Goggles may become more than just animage recognition app for your smartphone. An anonymoussource claims to have seen a pair of glasses being prototypedat Google that will run Android and connect to the cloud eitherthrough local Wi-Fi or when tethered to the internet overBluetooth to your smartphone. Outward-facing cameras wouldcapture the world, and overlay the image with contextuallocation data, like most augmented reality apps. That finalimage would then be displayed on a tiny screen over one of thetwo eyes. Apparently you’ll be able to navigate the userinterface with head tilting, which will no doubt get you someweird looks in public.The glasses will supposedly have a decent amount ofhorsepower, currently running with hardware roughly onegeneration behind the current smartphones. Of course,whatever the source may have seen was just some crazyskunkworks concept that never sees the light of day; for now,Google is supposedly unsure if it will fly, and will at best belaunching a Chromebook-style private beta program to test thewaters. This is cool, not necessarily because the idea is new (Vuzixalready has something in the market), but because Google’sdoing it. They’ve got the platform and the reach to turnaugmented reality glasses into every dork’s wet dream into athing that real people do.
